Frederic was hunched at the escape hole in the floor. Charlotte was pacing. The noise of bullets outside the room was deafening, she had never heard anything like it before, it was like the grinding crunch of some enormous machine, only more frightening and deadly. She was endeavouring to keep as calm as possible, to think rationally and hold her nerve. Frederic was trembling and she realised the boy was more scared than she was. It was an oddly elating thought; it made her somehow feel more in control.

She looked out of the window at the backyard where the sun was gradually interloping and chasing away the last of the night shadows. There was a wall to the right hand side and beyond it she could just see the edge of the road, but not enough to see the car or to know that one man was already bleeding in the dirt.

There was a pause in the shots and then the sound of pounding feet along the hallway. Frederic glanced at the door, then looked anxiously to her.

“Is that gun cocked?” Charlotte said, trying to sound as steady as Klaus had.

Frederic checked the gun and nodded back.

“Then there is nothing to fear.” She certainly had no intention of being captured in this place without shedding some Nazi blood.

Gun fire resumed and this time it sounded so much closer it made her jump.

“They are in the building.” Frederic said, biting his lip.

“How do you know?”

“That thudding we heard earlier, that was the door being broken in.”

Charlotte registered what he said. She had heard the dull thumping, muffled by the walls and floor, and had not really given it a thought. Now she realised she should have. Klaus had clearly heard it and come running. She still had a lot to learn if she was going to survive this experience. She turned back to the window, her mind considering the possibility of breaking the panes and climbing out if the worst came to the worst. Then she glanced down and saw him; a stranger in the shadows, a man in black keeping low to the wall. She noted the gun in his hand.

“Frederic, there is a man coming to the back door.” Charlotte went to the floor and carefully moved a board aside to reveal a long, narrow strip of clear space directly down into the kitchen. They had a clear shot from the back door to the archway that led to the main room of the house.

“Are you ready?” She asked the boy.

Frederic had lifted the gun and was pointing it like a child points a toy gun. Both hands bracing the barrel and arms straight out. Even Charlotte could see he could not aim like that. She was about to say something when she heard the door creaking.

Her eyes slid down to the kitchen. The back door had a simple latch that took little to nudge it open from the outside. This was the countryside where few families worried about intruders in the night and certainly, up until a few moments ago, not about SS men.
